413. Boyadoptee : I would like to make contact with my birth brother who was born Derek Robinson on 21/09/1956 at the Simpson Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh. He was adopted. Our birth mother’s name was Vera Robinson. She grew up Lanarkshire but later lived in Edinburgh. There are five siblings: Derek (b1956), Irene (b1960), Andrew (b1963), Philip (b1964) and Steven Robinson (b1965: me). I am now in contact with our sister Irene Robinson.
420. Shieldskerstin : I am looking for my sister who was given up for adoption by my parents before I was born. I’ve only had one conversation about her when my mother told me about her and that was about 20 years ago - so I have limited information - but I’ve tried to tell as much as I know, or think I know, below.
My mothers full name, which I believe will be on the birth certificate was Elizabeth Aileen Hauxwell (now Shields) and my father’s name is Thomas Martin Shields. Both parents are still alive. They met at school when they were 15 and my mother got pregnant when she was 16 and I think was in the Lower Sixth at school.
As I understand it, my mum was sent away from home and school to give birth presumably so no-one knew she had fallen pregnant. Ultimately, my Mum and Dad stayed together and married when my mother was 20 and father 22. I was born in 1969 when my mum was 23 so roughly 7 years after my sister. Sadly, between my sister’s birth and mine my parents had a son named Rob but he died aged about 18 months I believe and so despite my parents having had 3 children together, I am technically an only child.
My mother is also an only child to my grandparents and they were called Rhona and Jim Hauxwell - both of whom were born and bred in the North East of England in and around Durham City. At the time of my sister’s birth, they lived in a village called LIttletown just outside Durham City and I think my father lived in Durham City.
I don’t know for sure where my mother gave birth but do seem to have a sense that it was in Scotland and that my mum was sent to stay with Catholic Nuns in a home until after she gave birth.
I know my mother would very much like to be in contact but will feel that because at the time of the adoption there was no obligation for children to be told they had been adopted and birth mothers were told that they would never see the child again and that they must never try to get in touch so she feels she gave up all rights at the time and doesn’t have the right to impose herself now upon her daughter but if her daughter wanted to contact her, I know she’d be welcomed with open arms.
I have absolutely no other family than my mother, father (from whom I am estranged) and my two daughters. My partner and father of my daughters died suddenly 3 years ago. I was born and bred in Manchester but moved to London at 18 to go to University and have stayed here ever since. My parents and then my grandparents moved down to live nearby in Surrey about 20 years ago now but sadly my gran and grandad died about 5 or so years ago.
I am very very keen to meet my sister if she would like to meet with me. I haven’t told my mother I’m making this approach yet because I think it’s up to my sister to decide if she wants her know or not but Im hoping that regardless of her thoughts on that, she might want to know she has a full sister and perhaps even meet up.
