559. FrancescaGregory : Hello! My name is Francesca and I am trying to help my mother find her birth family. I don’t intend to try connect with her direct birth family‚ but hope to satisfy the lifelong curiosity of who they are in the hopes of helping her find peace of mind. She knows nothing of her birth family other than the details on her birth certificate and a few 23andMe DNA matches‚ the closest of which is a first cousin once removed. Here are the details of the family that we know so far:
My mother:
My mother is named Siobhan‚ a name given to her when she was adopted through an organisation connected to the Catholic church. Her birth name‚ likely given to her by the person that put her up for adoption‚ was Yvonne Corlett.
My mother’s biological mother:
The person that put her up for adoption was Margaret Corlett. The only information we have on her is that she gave birth to Siobhan/Yvonne in April or May 1963 in St. Pancras‚ London‚ England. On Siobhan’s birth certificate it states that Margaret worked at Wandle Valley Hospital in Surrey‚ England. We don’t have Margaret’s date of birth but suspect she could have possibly been born somewhere around 1940-1950.
My mother’s biological father:
We have no certain information regarding Siobhan’s biological father. However‚ due to contact with distant cousins that we have found‚ and the 20+ people on her genetic family tree that share the name Murphy‚ we suspect that his surname is Murphy.
Through researching mutual genetic connections on 23andMe‚ we believe we are able to decipher who is from Siobhan’s mother’s side and who is from her father’s side. We have noticed that the vast majority of connections on Siobhan’s father’s side mention some of their ancestors were from Ireland. We have also noticed that a mixture of connections on Siobhan’s mother’s side claim a mixture of ancestors from both Ireland and England‚ a couple of which mention the Liverpool/Merseyside area specifically.
Many of the people on both sides of the family also have heritage from and are born and raised in both the US and Canada. We suspect that people from both sides of my mother’s family moved there a few generations ago.
Amanda Pitre:
Amanda is the 1st cousin‚ potentially 1st cousin once removed‚ of Siobhan. We have contacted her and Amanda suspects that Siobhan is from her father’s mother’s side of the family‚ her great grandma’s side. Amanda‚ who lives in Alberta‚ Canada‚ said she consulted with her Auntie who claims that Amanda’s great grandmother only had sisters‚ all of which resided only in Canada. Amanda has plans to get her father’s DNA testing done to hopefully get us more answers in future.
Dylan Murphy:
The next closest relation to Siobhan is Dylan Murphy‚ her 2nd cousin. His profile does not disclose his date of birth or his location‚ and he has yet to respond to us. He is also listed as Amanda’s 2nd cousin. This is one of the several Murphy names repeated in Siobhan’s DNA matches.
Harry & Caitlyn Slade:
The next closest relation to Siobhan is Harry Slade‚ another 2nd cousin. He was born in 1964 and has a daughter called Caitlyn Slade that was born in 1990. Caitlyn’s profile states that all of her family are from the US apart from her paternal grandfather’s birthplace‚ which was Liverpool‚ and therefore likely the connection between them and Siobhan. There are a few more Slade names repeated in Siobhan’s DNA matches.
Heather C:
One of the relatives that people with the surname Slade have in common with Siobhan is a woman who’s profile is listed as Heather "C"‚ a 3rd cousin. She has input in her profile that she was born in 1968 in Dallas‚ Texas‚ United States‚ and the first in a list of names that her family members have is Corlett. Heather is the only biological connection to Siobhan that we have found so far online that specifically mentions the name Corlett. She has also listed that she potentially has heritage from somewhere near the Isle of Man.
Lynda Tonery:
Lynda Tonery‚ born in 1971‚ is listed as a 2nd cousin of Siobhan. Her profile lists her as having full Irish heritage‚ and also has the name Murphy in her family. Due to the Murphy name and the relatives in common‚ we believe she is from Siobhan’s father’s side. Lynda has contacted us and said that Siobhan is a second cousin on Lynda’s mother’s paternal side. Lynda’s mother’s father’s name was Peter Murphy‚ born somewhere around 1900 and died in exactly 1946‚ and he was from Barnacullia‚ Co. Dublin and ran a stone quarry with one of his brothers. Lynda suspects that Siobhan’s father is the son of one of Peter Murphy’s brothers. It is an unlikely possibility that one of Peter’s siblings married into the family Corlett and had Margaret.
Joseph E Barrett:
Joseph E Barrett‚ born 1937‚ from Cherry Hill‚ New Jersey‚ United States‚ is one of Siobhan’s 4th cousins. Joseph says that he has located family with the surname Nolan in Kilkenny and Dublin going back to about 1800. He is in search of the side of his family with the name Barrett. Siobhan has genetics in common with several people of both the family names Barrett and Nolan.
Emily Ward:
Emily Ward-Palmer from Fairfax‚ Virginia‚ United States‚ born in 1997‚ has let us know that her mother‚ who’s first name starts with D‚ and who’s last name is Ward‚ is Siobhan’s 2nd cousin. Therefore‚ one of Siobhan’s parents is a cousin of D’s mother. Emily has informed us that D’s mother’s name was Ethel Beggs‚ and her family is from Skerries Ireland right outside of Dublin. Emily suspects that one of Siobhan’s biological grandparents may have been a sibling to one of D’s grandparents. D’s maternal grandparents were called Robert Beggs and Anne Murphy. With information from D and Emily’s family tree‚ we suspect that Siobhan’s grandfather could be one of the following:
-William (Bill) Murphy 1896-1950
-Patrick Murphy 1898-1922 (Patrick is unlikely to be Siobhan’s grandfather‚ because he was never married and died young)
-Thomas Murphy 1901-1966
-Peter Murphy‚ 1903-1946
D‚ Emily and Siobhan have several mutual genetic connections in the US listed with heritage from Skerries‚ Dublin and Ireland.
Any help would be appreciated!
