How Do I Find My Adoption Records in Louisiana?

Thanks to a 2022 law, Louisiana adoptees can now request their adoption records, including their original birth certificates. Adoptees have access to these records once they turn 24 years old.

You can request your adoption records through the Louisiana Department of Health’s Bureau of Vital Records and Statistics.

How Do I Find My Adopted Sibling in Louisiana?

As a biological sibling, you cannot unseal adoption records without legal intervention. You can, however, join the Louisiana Voluntary Adoption Registry if you’re at least 18 years old. If your adopted sibling has also joined the registry, you’ll be notified of the match. You will be able to contact each other after you both complete counseling.

How to Unseal Adoptions Records in Louisiana?

If you’re an adoptee, you need to complete the form titled “Adoptee Application for Pre-Adoption Birth Certificate.” You must include a copy of a photo ID with the form. There’s a fee per copy. You can include a check or money order to Louisiana Vital Records.

You must mail your completed application to the Bureau of Vital Records and Statistics. The form needs to have your physical signature, so emailed applications won’t be accepted.

For everyone besides adoptees, unsealing adoption records in Louisiana requires a court order. However, other family members may be able to access some information through the Louisiana Adoption Voluntary Registry.

The state adoption registry works to reunite biological relatives who want to connect. You can join the registry if you’re:

  • An adoptee over 18 years old
  • A birth parent
  • A biological sibling over 18 years old
  • A parent, sibling, or descendant of a deceased birth parent
  • An adoptive parent of a minor adopted child
  • An adoptive parent or descendant of a deceased adopted person

Once you register, the state will notify you if there’s a match. When a match occurs, both parties need to complete a one-hour counseling session. A counselor will then notify the adoptee and other family members with details about the match. The counselor will pass along contact information so a reunion can take place.

Are Adoptions Closed in Louisiana?

Louisiana adoptions can be open or closed. In an open adoption, the birth family and the adoptive family know each other. One or both birth parents may continue to have contact with the child after the adoption is finalized. A closed adoption means the adoptive family doesn’t know the birth parents’ identities.

Closed adoption records in Louisiana are sealed, but the adoptee can request a copy once they turn 24. Birth parents can fill out a contact preference form to include in the sealed file. This form will tell the adoptee if the birth parent wants to be contacted. It will also include their preferred method of communication.
