247. M339731 : Looking for information on my grandfather.
My father was born in 1940 in Montreal to a Catholic unwed mother from Shediac New Brunswick (my grandmother‚ deceased). He was either in an orphanage or hospital for an unknown amount of time and had rheumatic fever. My grandmother was allowed to visit him once a week. At some point he went into the care of his grandparents back in Shediac New Brunswick for another unknown amount of time. He was eventually sent to Ancaster Ontario‚ back into the care of my grandmother who had gotten married.
My grandmother’s name was Florence Melanson and would have been in her mid to late 20’s when she got pregnant. Her parents were Eloie & Cecile (Arsenault) Melanson. In 1934 she and her sister Beatrice were working at Atlantic Underwear in Moncton. Don’t know if she moved to Montreal to work or to have my dad‚ so don’t know if she got pregnant in New Brunswick or Montreal. She apparently worked for a Doctor as a maid in Montreal‚ and later worked for a Mr. Mann in Ancaster (and possibly Montreal) who was high up in the America Can Co. My grandmother never revealed the name of my dad’s father to anyone still living that we know of‚ but we do know that it was a difficult and painful time in her life.
Since my dad wasn’t adopted at birth‚ I’m not even sure how to start searching. Did unwed mothers ever reveal the father’s name on any birth records in the 1940s? If anyone has any info on my grandfather‚ or even info on hospitals & orphanages in Montreal during the 40’s‚ I’d love to hear it.
