Adoptions in Kansas can be open or closed. In an open adoption, the adoptive family knows the birth parents’ identities. The birth parents may even have contact with the adoptee, such as phone calls or visits. In a closed adoption, the birth parents remain confidential and have no contact with the child.
Regardless of the type of adoption, the records become sealed after an adoption is finalized. Adoptees can get Kansas adoption records opened once they turn 18.
Are Kansas Adoption Records Public?
No, Kansas adoption records are not public. However, the state allows adoptees to request their adoption records if they’re 18 or older. Birth parents in Kansas cannot access adoption records unless they get a court order.
How Do I Get My Original Birth Certificate if I Was Adopted in Kansas?
You can submit a request to access your original birth certificate, also known as a before adoption birth certificate, if you’re 18 or older. Your request must be written and notarized. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) provides a sample you can use to make your request.
Mail your request to the KDHE Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka. You also need to include a $20 fee to the Office of Vital Statistics. Once approved, you’ll receive an uncertified copy of your original birth certificate.
If you’re not an adoptee, you’ll need a court order to obtain a copy of a person’s original birth certificate.
How to Unseal Adoption Records in Kansas
Adult adoptees who want to access their adoption records can file a request through the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). You’ll need to complete a form and provide proof of identification with a copy of your driver’s license or birth certificate.
Once you file your request, you should get your adoption records within four to six weeks. These records may include your birth family’s medical and social history, photos, and correspondence. If a private agency handled the adoption, it may have more information. You should contact the agency to request your complete adoption file.
While Kansas only allows adoptees to access these records, the state will conduct adoption searches to reunite biological relatives. Adoptees, birth parents, and biological siblings can request searches.
The search process can take several months, and there’s no guarantee the state will find your family members. If the state can locate your birth relatives, they must consent to having contact with you. If they don’t, the state will keep a record of your search. Your information will be available to them if they change their mind and want to have contact with you in the future.
To start a search, find the appropriate form on the DCF website and complete it. For search requests, you must get the form notarized. You’ll also need to provide proof of identification.

I have just always wondered about them and would love to find them I have other siblings I grew up with but would really like to find my dad’s kids he never got to meet and I can tell it still bothers him
1219. DestineyRoseMartinez : Looking for a sibling who is searching for me. I am Destiney Rose Martinez Fisher who was born in Iowa City Iowa. My mom is Rachel Fisher and dad is Gonzalo Martinez.
1220. Trissell : It has recently came to my attention that William Wyley born in Arkansas m. Maggie Kitchen/s born in Kansas was married in 1884 in Leavenworth‚ Kansas. In the 1885 State Census of Prairie‚ Wyandotte County‚ Kansas‚ they was listed and it mention only been married for a year.
1221. Samanthaw1982 : I am looking for my birthmother‚ I was born April 14th‚ 1982 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita Kansas to Judy Eilene Butler and was 24 at the time‚ my name at the time was Baby Girl Kelly Butler‚ she has a daughter that was 3 at the time
1222. Cat761 : I was adopted through Kansas Children’s service league. I was born at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topkea‚ KS. The agency gave my adopted family a print out of general information regarding my birth parents. In that letter it stated that my birth parents decided not to get married‚ while they were in college. My birth father had also been adopted. I believe it said that my birth mother was in school to become a nurse. My birth father had strawberry blonde hair and I think my birth mother did as well.
1223. Angelaxr7 : My brother was born on 7/2/1976 and was taken from my mom on 7/3/1976 as part of a black-market adoption ring common during that era in San Francisco‚ CA. The baby was taken from my 14 year old mom as she was a runaway at the time. She was released from the University of California San Francisco Hospital (San Francisco County). My mom was initially allowed to see the baby (left unattended in a portable crib by her hospital bed). The next morning‚ a hospital employee informed her that her baby had died. They would not allow her to see her baby again‚ and when she asked about the burial‚ the nurse told her it was against the rules and that her child would instead be buried in mass grave. They had her sign some form resembling a "contract" that she didn’t understand. A few years ago‚ I happened to cross paths with a retired RN who happened to work in the SF area during those years with her husband who was a physician. She was quite familiar with‚ and apologetic for‚ the unfortunate practice of black-market adoptions at those hospitals‚ during that era. She was a wealth of information and informed me that we are possibly looking for a child with a birth certificate filed within a few days of 7/2/76 with the generic name "Baby Boy" on the birth certificate. The retired RN I spoke with mentioned that the hospital staff would not have filed a false death certificate for these types of situations due to the legal implications of filing a false death record. On May 27‚ 2022 - We confirmed with the vital records office in San Francisco that there is a certificate of live birth but no death record exists for my brother which confirms he did not die in the hospital on July 3‚ 1976 and that the hospital indeed lied.
1224. Kadini17 : Baby boy put up for adoption. You were born in Wichita‚ KS. August 21‚ 1966. Your birth Mom’s name is Linda. I’m hoping to find you and see if you want to meet your birth mom. I would be your Aunt. I know something either side is hesitant to meet the other‚ but I will be here to help make that happen if you both want.
