Register Now DirectoryAre Adoptions in Kansas Open?
Adoptions in Kansas can be open or closed. In an open adoption, the adoptive family knows the birth parents’ identities. The birth parents may even have contact with the adoptee, such as phone calls or visits. In a closed adoption, the birth parents remain confidential and have no contact with the child.
Regardless of the type of adoption, the records become sealed after an adoption is finalized. Adoptees can get Kansas adoption records opened once they turn 18.
Are Kansas Adoption Records Public?
No, Kansas adoption records are not public. However, the state allows adoptees to request their adoption records if they’re 18 or older. Birth parents in Kansas cannot access adoption records unless they get a court order.
How Do I Get My Original Birth Certificate if I Was Adopted in Kansas?
You can submit a request to access your original birth certificate, also known as a before adoption birth certificate, if you’re 18 or older. Your request must be written and notarized. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) provides a sample you can use to make your request.
Mail your request to the KDHE Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka. You also need to include a $20 fee to the Office of Vital Statistics. Once approved, you’ll receive an uncertified copy of your original birth certificate.
If you’re not an adoptee, you’ll need a court order to obtain a copy of a person’s original birth certificate.
How to Unseal Adoption Records in Kansas
Adult adoptees who want to access their adoption records can file a request through the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF). You’ll need to complete a form and provide proof of identification with a copy of your driver’s license or birth certificate.
Once you file your request, you should get your adoption records within four to six weeks. These records may include your birth family’s medical and social history, photos, and correspondence. If a private agency handled the adoption, it may have more information. You should contact the agency to request your complete adoption file.
While Kansas only allows adoptees to access these records, the state will conduct adoption searches to reunite biological relatives. Adoptees, birth parents, and biological siblings can request searches.
The search process can take several months, and there’s no guarantee the state will find your family members. If the state can locate your birth relatives, they must consent to having contact with you. If they don’t, the state will keep a record of your search. Your information will be available to them if they change their mind and want to have contact with you in the future.
To start a search, find the appropriate form on the DCF website and complete it. For search requests, you must get the form notarized. You’ll also need to provide proof of identification.

832. Tsands1976 : I am a blood relative in search of brother and sister both adopted together named alejandro enriquez and isabella enriquez also another of their sibling rigoletto enriquez jr born in the state of Georgia taken by the state
833. Dsyeaton : We looked for decades for a missing cousin. We found his sibling several years ago via cousinconnect and him this year (2019) via DNA, about two weeks before their birth mother our aunt died. She was born in 1960 and adopted in FL. He was born in 1958, adopted in CA, and lives in UT. At our aunt’s funeral, neighbors told us that in her last months, she told them she had children. Three or four children. Neighbors have told us that the aunt (born 1936) became pregnant in high school (1950-1955 if this is true) or at age 17 (1953-1954 if this is true) and was sent to FL to have the baby. We do not know much: mother’s maiden name, if listed: Anderson, birth state of mother: MA, she was very tall and thin, loved animals and dogs, Danish, German, English ethnicity. We have done DNA on ancestrydna and 23andme. If this is you....or you think it could be you because part of the story matches...please do DNA testing so that we can see if we match! And we are unsure why there were said to be: three or four children. Could it have been twins, which run in our family? Or is there another child with a different birth year and possible different birth and adoption state? These birth years are only guesses...it conceivably could have been any time after her birth in 1936 as maybe a teen (1949 or before?) to menopause (maybe before 1986?) but most likely in the 1950s or 1960s. Do any of these guesses for you or someone you know? We are a dozen cousins looking for decades!
834. Lisagardner066 : My name before the adoption was Lisa Kay Morrow. Mother Maiden Name Vickie Wynn Lee? Married at the time to Jimmie Amos Morrow who is now past away. Through Ancestry.com I was able to find that her maiden name was Lee. My grandmother’s name may have been Lucy Belle Green. I do have adoption documents that gives some information. I was born at the Green Clinic in Dallas Texas. My adoptive parents attorney was William F. Butters. I will be more then happy to email you the documents if it would help. I did find my biological father, however he has since past and from what my half sister told me, we think this was a passing fling as they have no information on my birth mother. From other documents I found Jimmie and Vickie had another daughter after me who died 1 day later. This is speculation only. The two state were selected because the final adoption order states Shawnee County, Kansas but I have other correspondence that has Texas on them. I am already registered with Ancestry.com and 23andme.
835. CadyM : I’m trying to help my fiance get some answers to help him figure out who he is and where he comes from. We know he was born at Saint Joseph Hospital on July 4, 1991 in Wichita, KS. He only spent 3 days in the hospital with his birth mother. Her name would’ve been Amy White at the time. She was 15 or 16 when she had him. She says she doesn’t remember much about the father other than him being in his early 20s and working for the carnival. She says they met at the Kansas State Fair. She says he had light blonde hair, light eyes, and she believes his name was Gary or Greg. My fiance is struggling and would love a chance to finally know about the other half of himself!
836. Ultraracing : Paula Kay Ellison
837. Gwoessner : Born in Wichita. KS March 3rd, 1982. As far as I know I was in foster care the first 14 months then was adopted. I recall Erby Trout but not sure.
838. Cmculli47 : The adoptee was born at Wesley Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. I understand that her adoptive parents lived in Sedgwick County, Kansas at the time of adoption and that they may have kept her birth first name of Christina.
839. Research6 : twin girls
840. Rachellelkelley : I am looking for my niece, who was born Hope Elizabeth Kelley. She was born in Salina, Kansas, to Dianne Hymer and Lonny Kelley, on June 10, 1987. It was a private adoption. My family and I have no desire to disrupt her life but would love to meet her and get to know her.
