13. Exotiq : I just learned, at age 45, that I’m adopted. My adoptive parents Avril Sarita White & Guadencio Ernesto Vasquez are in their 80s now and have been divorced since I was about 3 or 4 years oldprobably only a couple of years after my adoption. I recall bonding with my adoptive father more and it hurt me for years after my adoptive folks split. My adoptive mother raised me with a family-traditional iron-fist method of very strict parenting, so harsh in fact, that it would be considered child abuse by today’s standards and as a result it left me with self-esteem issues and made me depressive starting in my teen years. I found myself wondering why I couldn’t relate to my mother and why I always felt inadequate. Now, learning that I’m adopted, the past makes more sense to me today and now I see why I wasn’t like my adoptive mother....how could I be? Not only did I not look anything like her, but I didn’t behave like her or thought like her. I found out that my biological mother was a very nice, well-respected black woman in the neighborhood who also had several children, by different men and I understand that I and my little baby brother were from the same man, a white Navy doctor, American, I presume. Apparently my brother was first offered to my adoptive parents, possibly because he was the youngest, but he was a sickly child and died only approx. 3 months after in my adoptive parent’s care, which devastated them terribly, which at that point, I was then next offered up to them...(as a consolation prize?). I was told that my adoption was informal, which could mean that it may have been illegal. My adoptive folks apparently worked odd jobs to earn enough money to adopt me, a sum of approx. $10,000, believed to be equivalent to approx. $1 million dollars in Guatemala in the 1960s at that time....I’m not certain if that figure is a fair equivalent, but that is how it was told to me about a week ago (Christmas Day 2010...in confidence)! Since my folks split at a young age, I was raised by my adoptive mother and grew up around her side of the family...the White family, from Belize, Central America. Although I’ve never seen my birth certificate, my 1st Guatemalan passport showed my name to be Betty Carol Vasquez. When I became a naturalized American citizen in 1974, at the age of 9, my name was legally changed to Elizabeth Carrol Vasquez. I’m trying to see if I can find my biological father, if he’s even still alive today and I would also like to find my biological family on my mother’s side, since I have half brothers and sisters. I grew up an only child and always yearned for a sibling. I was told that my biological mother died approx. 1 year after my adoption. Unfortunately, all information was provided to me in secrecy by a family member on my adoptive mother’s side (the White family). I was not given any names and I am hoping to get more information from my adoptive mother once I am able to speak with her face-to-face. I reside in the USA, while my adoptive mother is currently in Belize, Central America at the moment.
