My name is Shalom C. Spira [e-mail address: <shalom>], and I volunteer as the personal rabbi for the adopted individual in question, Mr. Bruce Martin Herman. He asked me to conduct this search on his behalf. Here are the relevant details: Mr. Herman was born to unknown parents on Aug. 14, 1958 and was adopted within a few weeks by the late Florence and Hyman Herman in Montreal, Quebec. In order to facilitate this adoption, Florence and Hyman Herman (who were Jews) asked Rabbi Chaim Denburg at Congregation Shomrim Laboker to convene an ad hoc Beth Din (Jewish religious court) to perform a conversion on the baby, which he did. Recently, I represented Mr. Herman before the established Beth Din of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal [website at <https>], asking whether it will recognize Mr. Herman’s conversion to Judaism as being a valid conversion. The conclusion of that hearing is that Mr. Herman’s status is one of doubt according to Torah law (i.e. he might be a Noahide and he might be a Jew), but that the Jewish Community Council of Montreal is willing to assist Mr. Herman to escape the doubt either way (he can now protest his conversion at infancy to thereby retroactively become a definite Noahide, or he could now undergo a new conversion to thereby become a definite Jew), depending on what he personally chooses. While Mr. Herman has yet to determine which choice he prefers, he is curious to know if there are any records regarding his birth parents, which might help inform his choice. Thank you for all your help.
