This profile is for my Grandmother Patrica (Patty) Lee Rowbotham (Adopted Name Bevington and possible birth last name is Mathey *father’s name* or Hanna/Hannoy/Hannah *mother’s possible last names unsure of spelling* and her siblings Billy (Bill) Mathey and Joann Burns. Their story is one that is tragic yet fascinating and hopeful all at the same time. Their father Charles Mathey and their mother Dorthey Hanna/Hannoy/Hannah my great-grandmother and great-grandfather abandoned them in most likely a hotel (I’m trying to verify this for sure as my great uncle was only 4 at the time and his memory of things and his willingness to talk about things were both limited) in Salem, Ohio My grandmother (Patty) was about 6 months old, my great aunt (Joann) was 2, and my great uncle (Bill) was 4 when this happened. Apparently my great-grandparents were together as the result of an affair and we have verified that my great-grandfather Charles had three other children and a wife that he abandoned. So the problem is not with finding him, but with finding out more of his family history as by the time we located him he had already passed away and his other children that were still alive were not very forthcoming about anything to do with him. The big problem is finding my birth great-grandmother because she may have used a false name on my great uncle’s birth certificate. Because he was never adopted his birth certificate is the only name we have to go off of. Now for my grandmother an my great aunt they were both adopted by different families. What makes their story so fascinating and much less sad is that my great uncle, my great aunt, and my grandmother all grew up together knowing eachother. My grandmother and my great uncle also knew that my great aunt was adopted and their sister, but that her family didn’t want her to know this. So when my great aunt’s parents passed away and she discovered she was adopted she also learned that two of her oldest childhood friends were her siblings and that their love for her was great enough to let her be raised by a good family who loved her and to put aside how they felt about wanting her to know just how close they all were. My great uncle died some years back and my grandmother passed away December 2019. So there’s not a lot I can do about getting any answers from them, and from what my mom said one half sibbiling died young, one died a couple years back, and the other she’s unsure of, but she’s pretty sure none of them had any children. For me this is about trying to find out more about genetic history as there are some severe health problems that run in my family and can’t be tracked through my grandfather’s side of the family. But another part of me is curious what happened to my great-grandmother. I know that my great-grandfather died penniless, alone, and homeless and I wonder if his past of abandoning two families, one of which he left for dead, caught up with him. I also wonder about the fate of my great-grandmother a woman who was the cause of someone leaving a family and how her life played out after she left her own family for dead, if that’s even what happened. I sometimes wonder if she didn’t leave, and if something worse happened to her. There’s a lot of questions I have that I would like to be answered.
