My grandmother was adopted in Wilkes County North Carolina to Willis Howard and Cordia Simpson in 1940. My great grandfather Willis Howard worked at the hospital she was born but I lost her birth certificate and cannot remember the name of the hospital. They then moved to Raeford‚ North Carolina and he worked for the hospital near where he lived until he retired shortly after I was born. The only information that was given to my family is that reason for the adoption was that my grandmother was born to a Native American woman and a Caucasian man. My great grandparents died without telling her who her parents were and my maternal grandmother died in 2018 not knowing who her parents were. I was told at some point in my life that we are part Lumbee but I am unsure of this because the Lumbee lived in Hoke County and surrounding counties. I understand that the Lumbee tribe is part of three other tribes in North Carolina.
