In May of 1962, my mother and I immigrated to the United States. We took a charter flight from Vienna Austria to New York and since my mother was one of the few people (including the crew) spoke both English and German, she was asked to help with the announcements and they also asked us to watch over a little boy named Solly, for the duration of the trip., he was being adopted in New York and was travelling all alone at the age of 2. There was a fire in our propeller during flight and we had to inadvertently land in Ghana, Newfundland where we waited for two days, at a pretty bleak airport, for a replacement part for the plane. Little Solly was such a trooper. I was 12 at the time and grew totally attached to this little blonde haired, adorable toddler over the three days we spent together. We slept on chairs at the airport and ate mostly oranges, which was basically the only thing available there. Upon our arrival, we had to circle for two hours in the New York City air traffic and my mother became extremely ill from air sickness. We stepped off the plane and I was devastated to have to relinquish little Solly to a black lady, dressed in a white uniform. We clung to each other and I had no choice but to tearfully let go. My mother was still very sick and unfortunately did not get any information about where he would be going and I was not given any either. All we know is that he did not speak German and came from either Poland or Czechoslovakia - somewhere around there and was an orphan. All these years, I have thought about him and regretted the fact that I was never able to find him again, to see what became of him and to tell him how much I came to care for him back then. I would love to have any information you could give me about how I can possibly find him or at least get to know where he ended up and if he is happy. Thanking you in advance. My mother’s name was Margarethe Mayer and I was Elfriede Mayer. The little boy’s name was merely Solly. We never got a last name. Our flight from Vienna was a prop jet charter to New York in May of 1962. I believe it was Sabena Airways.
