My maternal grandfather, Walter Francis Grogan, was born Feb 6, 1900 or 1901 (and died in July, 1970 per Soc Sec records). My mother, Therese Grogan Vanderyajt (Walter’s daughter), always understood that he had been adopted, as his mother, Margaret Grogan, was a widow when Walter was born. At the time, the family (including 4 older sisters and 1 older brother) were living at 111 Radde St. in Long Island City, Queens, New York. There were rumors that his mother, Margaret, may have had an affair, or that one of the older daughters (Katie or Loretta) may have had a child out of wedlock, or that Walter may have been a friend’s or neighbor’s child.
