Walter (Francis) Grogan was born on February 6, 1900 or 1901 (Soc Sec indicates 1901, but WWI military draft record indicates 1900). It has always been understood by descendants that Walter was adopted, as his mother, Margaret Grogan (my great grandmother), was a widow at the time of Walter’s birth. The Grogan family lived on Radde St. in Long island City, Queens, New York at this time. There have been family rumors that Margaret may have had an affair, or that one of the older sisters (Katie, Loretta or Florence) may have had a child out of wedlock, or that Walter was a friend’s or neighbor’s child that could not keep him. Walter is my maternal grandfather. I have a family tree and have had my DNA tested. I have learned that I have 2nd cousins (i.e. related at the great grandparent level) that simply don’t match up to any other relatives in my family tree. I suspect, but have not yet proven, that they may be related to me through Walter. Surnames from the great grandparent level of these 2nd cousins include Boswell, Burke, Newby and Ackermann.
