Nicolas Donte (Nico) was taken from his mother by dhs when she was staying in a hotel in Slidell helping with the Katrina clean up efforts. I am his cousin, but from birth until she decided to go from Arkansas to Louisiana when he was about 8 months old he lived with me and I was his sole care giver. I was his mother for all intents and purposes. And I fought for him when she called me and told me they had confirmed that she would not get custody of him again. He had already been in dhs custody about 5 months before she called and told me. I immediately filed my intent and went through 3 months of hoops and demands and tests in order to get custody of him. However I was only 19, a single woman in the “Bible Belt” and received a letter stating I had been denied due to having too many points on my driving record. (I had a failure to come to a complete stop in an empty 4 way and a 56 in a 50. That was it). Every year on February 10, I both celebrate and mourn another missed birthday. I keep pictures on my phone of him as a baby… the last and only we have of him. I pray he’s had a good and happy life and we don’t want to disrupt that by any means. We only want to know that our prayers all these years have been heard and answered and that my little man is okay.
