I was made aware of my adoption when I was in the 5th grade. I am now 50 years old. I was born in 1968. Both my brother and I were reportedly adopted from Phillipsburg, KS and we were told that Dr. Mary Townsend Glassen was the doctor that delivered us. Our birth certificates also had our adoptive parents listed as our birth parents. My brother is 2 years younger than I am, but we are not biologically related. According to our parents, they do not have any more information about biological family. About 8 years ago, I ran into someone who was from Phillipsburg and our conversation started that I have never "been" to Phillipsburg, but I was born there. I stated that I had been adopted and they told me of a large black market adoption ring there. I did a lot of searching on the internet and found that this was actually true. My husband actually did business sometimes in Phillipsburg and he arranged with the city clerk to go through the records there and they spent the entire morning going through paper files to find any record of my birth. There were no babies recorded that were born on my birthday and no record of any adoptions within 2 weeks of mine. The clerk reported that may people have come there searching for records and leave with nothing. When he inquired about the black market adoptions, she would not really talk about it. What I do know from others who have posted information about this, is that there was a network with a lot of other doctors even in other states. So likely, I was not even born in Phillipsburg. My adoptive father passed away 7 years ago and my adoptive mother is in poor health. I’m not sure if they had information that they are not sharing or if they really don’t have information on our births. My brother does not want to find out any information so he refuses to talk to me about it. I have brown hair and green eyes, but I am only 5’2. I am not sure if this is a match, but just wanting to inquire.I had a DNA test done several years ago from ancestry.com but it did not give me info on close relation. I would like to have another one done soon.
