1880 Iowa Census lists my great-great grandfather, Sidney James Bennett, and wife, Edith Case, have a 2 year old adopted daughter Hope Bennett. I do not have any genealogical records about Hope Bennett and did not know of her until looking at census records. Though in the above questionnaire I listed Hope’s birthdate as January 1st, I have no other information than 1878 as her birth year. The census lists Hope as an orphan. United States Census, 1880 Iowa Webster Fort Dodge ED 227 Source Box In 1893, Sidney and Edith Bennett adopted Mabel Courter (birth daughter of Charles Courter/Courtier as listed on the adoption certificate) who is my maternal great-grandmother. I have the original adoption certificate of Mabel Courter Bennett which I will present to my son and his wife when their infant daughter’s adoption is finalized. I want my granddaughter to have as much family information as possible and for her to have a a feeling of belonging to our family and to have a connection with her adopted 3 times great grandmother.
