*****PLEASE SEE UPDATE ON 12/8/18, GENEALOGICAL AND EXTENSIVE 2 DAYS OF HISTORCIAL RECORD VIA THE MINNESOTA HISOTRICAL SOCIETY, FAMILYSEARCH AND ANCESTRY.COM LOCATED THE BIOLOGICAL PARENTS AND THE FAMILIES***** The info. on Sandra Elaine Jones AKA Baby Penny or Penny Nordgren born July 15, 1946 indicates adoption via the Lutheran Welfare/Social Services in Des Moines, Iowa and Dr. who did delivery was J. Donald Anderson from the Booth Memorial Hospital. Sandra’s Adoptive parents were Bruce Clyde Jones and Elma (maiden name Redfield) who have been deceased since the 1989 and 2003, respectively. Sandra lived in the Des Moines Area of Iowa until her marriage to a man named Brownell. All of the following info. from the non-identifying file indicates the Biol. mother was Lutheran, worked in the secretarial occupation who was 37 yrs. of age, 5-2, 112 lbs, light brown hair and blue eyes. The Biological Mother’s father was born in Sweden and died at age 41 yrs. of an unknown cause, her mother was still alive housekeeping and there was an older married sister. The Biol. mother was married twice first to a man with whom she had a 15 yr. old son and 13 yr. old daughter (some info. seems to point to first husband’s last name being Nordgren) at the time of the birth of Sandra Jones AKA Penny Nordgren. The first husband of the Biological mother was likely a Mr. Nordgren, who died of strep throat infection, after a marriage of 7 yrs. to the Biol. mother, most likely in the mid- late 1930s to early 1940s. Sandra ’s Biol. mother re-married and divorced another man after 2.5 yrs. of marriage before becoming pregnant by a third man (the Biological father) who was 36 yrs. old, a sign painter working with window displays, artistically inclined with asthma and had a family of three daughters ages 8, 4, and 12 at the time of Penny Nordgren’s birth. Both of his parents were still living, but divorced and he had two older sisters as of July, 15 1946. He was 36 yrs. of age, 5-10, Dark eyes, Dark hair and darker complexion of protestant faith being Dutch, English and Irish. Both biological parents were high school graduates. Per family lore the biological mother left the Booth Des Moines hospital after the child’s birth and was going to speak with the biological father about the possibility of keeping/raising the child, but this was unavailing and a week later the mother called the Lutheran Social Services and stated she would not be able to keep young Sandra Jones AKA Baby Penny Nordgren. Records of the Booth Memorial Hospital indicate over 90% of adoptions of unwed mothers occurred from women within the state of Iowa and that per Major Ruth Lowe, Superintendent and Major Parsons of the Salvation Army Booth Hospital in 1949 and 1951 newspaper articles from the Des Moines Register stated that there were only 4 to 5 women/females aged over 30, with the oldest being 38, unwed mohers who gave birth at the Booth Hospital from 1941 to 1951. The Biological mother in this case was 37 yrs. of age at the time of the birth July 15, 1946 and indeed an extreme older outlier in terms of age for the Booth Hospital at that time. Although most births at the Booth Home were from those within Iowa, there is a slight possibility the Booth memorial Hospital and Lutheran Welfare/Social Services adoption agency in Des Moines, Iowa may have taken adoptions out of state. However, this has not been definitively established to-date. *****BIOLOGICAL PARENTS OF PENNY NORDGREN AKA SANDRA ELAINE JONES IS CHARLES RUSSELL BAKER AND HELEN M NORDGREN*****
