My maternal grandmother was abandoned on a streetcar in January of 1931. She was found at E Washington Street and Audubon Rd. She was born on December 30, 1930 according to notations in her file obtained through the Indiana State Archives. She was awarded to the state by the Marion county courts on January 21, 1931 and placed with temporary custody in the Children’s Guardians Home in Indy. She was adopted by Samuel And Irene Johnson in Anderson, IN. Adoption was finalized on July 9, 1931. My grandmothers story hit the newspapers for many weeks as the parents were sought. I have alleged names of parents per notes in the file from the Children’s Home. A social worker/police woman, Nell Dunkle worked the case. According to the Dr. at City Hospital in Indy, my grandmother was birthed by those with little to no birthing knowledge. I am looking for the both families mainly for medical purposes. My grandmother passed in 1989 from a long battle with ovarian cancer. My mother mother is currently battling breast cancer and I’d like to see names on paper to put peace within.
