My brother was born in Michigan City‚ Indiana‚ where my mother lived in a home for unwed mothers. My mother‚ Elizabeth Dugan‚ listed Phyllis Patterson as a pseudonym. She named her son Peter‚ but I don't know if that's on the birth certificate. My grandmothers‚ Elizabeth Fitch Dugan (mother's mother) and Elizabeth Holman Whitehead (father's mother)‚ arranged for a private adoption through Elizabeth Fitch Dugan's attorney I don't know his/her name. My mother lived with her parents in Hinsdale‚ Illinois. That may be where the adoption officially took place. My brother may not know he was adopted. My mother married my father‚ Lewis Holman Whitehead‚ in 1948 in an attempt to get their son back‚ but the papers had already been signed. My grandmother kept in touch with the attorney‚ who told her that the child and his parents had moved to England. Not sure if that's true‚ but that's my mother's recollection. My mother didn't tell her children any of this until she was diagnosed with lung cancer and died soon after‚ in 1986. I have registered with various agencies. My mother thought that her son was adopted through The Cradle in Evanston‚ but they have no record of it. Thanks.
