I was born Hugh Dermot O’Connor at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana, on April 25, 1975. My parents were from Ireland. Their names were Derek Robert O’Connor and Marian Frances Ryan (maiden name), both from Ireland. After my birth, I was relinquished to the state of Indiana for foster placement and adoption. I was fostered in Indianapolis from 1975-1977 or 1978, then placed with my adoptive family in the Fort Wayne area in 1977 or 1978 (age 2 or 3). Adoption was finalized and legalized in 1989. My legal name, at adoption, became Francis Joel Smith.
