Born in Booth Memorial Hospital in St. Louis‚ Missouri by the name of Johnny Oehler. John’s adoptive father was born in 1929 and was 40 years old at the time of his birth. He was of German ancestry. He grew up in the Lutheran church‚ but later he and his wife became members of a Methodist church. He stood 6’1” tall‚ weighed 190 pounds‚ had blonde hair and hazel eyes. He was a quiet‚ somewhat shy man who warmed up to a person after getting to know them. The adoptive father’s parents separated when he was two years old‚ and he grew up primarily with his mother. His father remarried the wife of one of his brothers. The adoptive father then spent some time in the home of his father‚ aunt‚ and two girl cousins. The adoptive father completed 1 ½ years of high school and served in the Navy. He had many talents including plumbing and woodworking. He worked as a custodian. He completed a great deal of work on their home including making kitchen cabinets and a sewing cabinet. He also built several items for his church including the registry in the vestibule‚ clocks for the Sunday school classes‚ and several tables. He also enjoyed music and hunting. The adoptive mother was born in 1931 and was 38 years old at the time of John’s birth. She was of English-Irish heritage and involved in church activities during her childhood. She was 5’7” tall‚ weighed 145 pounds‚ had blonde hair and blue eyes. She grew up with her parents‚ and they were both in good health at the time of your son’s birth. The adoptive mother had a brother who was five years older‚ worked as a farmer‚ completed high school‚ was married and had two daughters who were 5 and 8 years old at the time. During her childhood she was a member of 4-H and had chickens‚ calves‚ and gardening as her projects. She was a high school graduate and belonged to G.A.A. and F.H.A. all four years. She was a member of band and chorus‚ and she had a part in the senior play. She was salutatorian of her class‚ and she felt education was very important. She had worked as a bookkeeper and sales clerk before she became employed at an insurance company. She resigned from her job when they became parents. The couple were married in 1952 just after the husband joined the Navy. They resided in a small community and their parents and brother lived nearby. They were active members of the Methodist church. They were unable to have children of their own. The couple had one son that they adopted from The Baby Fold as a newborn. He was born in 1964 and was described as a nice‚ friendly child. He was attending school at the time John joined the family. John was born May 20‚ 1969 at 2:55AM in Booth Memorial Hospital‚ St. Louis. He weighed 6 pounds fourteen ounces and was 18” long. He was admitted to The Baby Fold nursery on February 27‚ 1970. On March 13‚ 1970 he weighed 19 pounds and was 29” long. He was in good health and eating solid foods well. He had dark blonde hair‚ blue eyes‚ and a “captivating smile.” He met his adoptive parents and brother on March 18‚ 1970. They were excited to be able to make him a part of their family and eagerly took him home with them that day. There was a routine visit made on April 7‚ 1970. The relationship between John and his adoptive family was described as excellent. He had four teeth and was walking around by pushing on a stool. The extended family accepted him and loved him.
