My birth mother’s last known name was "Vilma Esperanza Flores" she was 26 when I was adopted. I was born in Cobán‚ Guatemala in 1989. Taken immediately at birth in dirty rags to a foster home where I stayed with a local family for the first few years until my adopted parents could come collect me and finalize the adoption in 91’-92’. I fought for my life immediately after birth due to infection. It is said that my grandmother had ties to a local church in Cobán and assisted in the connection of the adoption ministry that was used. At the time Guatemalan adoption corruption was rampant and the country had not yet put a cap on it. But my adoption paper work had to be rewritten‚ and my birth mother was not able to be located for this process. A search was mounted and an ad in the local paper was published until enough time had passed to where legally speaking I was a Ward of the state and able to be adopted out. This however did not superseded the birth mother’s right to recant the adoptions consent and she could have collected me at any time during the almost two years after my birth‚ while I was still in country. Finally‚ the adoption was approved and my family brought me home and I became a Canadian citizen. I have documentation of my adoption as well the coorisponding archive reference logs in Cobán. Lastly a quote from the adoption papers that stands out from my birth mother herself of her wishes for my adopted parents to follow: "...and requests them to give all the love‚ care and fulfill the obligations which the adoption imposes." I want to establish contact with my birth mother and am looking for the best way forward.
