1988Mother
Two weeks after my 17th birthday (February 8, 1988), I gave birth to a tiny baby boy (only around 4 lbs) at Humana Bennett Hospital in Plantation, FL. The date was on or very close to 2/22/1988. Out of utter fear, I had managed to keep the pregnancy hidden from my parents. I had no idea what I was going to do when the day came when I would have to give birth. Part of me was in denial that I was even pregnant. Well, the day did inevitably come when I needed to be taken to the emergency room about 3:30 A.M. because of "intense stomache pain" I didn’t have the courage to tell my parents I was in labor. Long story short, my parents eventually found a female adoption lawyer (I may remember her name) who contacted a couple in their 30’s who weren’t able to have children about my son. The adopting mother had written me a letter telling me about the day her mother ran to find her in the mall with the news from the lawyer of a baby up for adoption. She said the costs were going to be more than they expected, because he was in the NICU, but somehow it would all work out. In addition, she was very excited because my baby was born on her birthday. I believe they were Christians. In the hospital they asked for a name with the understanding it could be changed since he was being adopted. I said "Michael". My mother told me many years later she had contacted the adoption lawyer to ask about him, and see how he was doing. She said the lawyer told her they had moved out of the state some time after he turned 5. I have never stopped thinking about him, and wondering about his life and the man he has now become. I would very much like to thank the adopting parents, and meet this young man who would have turned 29 this year (2017). Would love to catch up on lost time.
