Kim Bang Ok was born in Seoul, South Korea on 27 February 1977. The adoption was supervised by Bonnie McKay of the Ventura County Social Services Department in Ventura, California. The adoption agency used was Friends of Children of Vietnam. According to the narrative we received at the time, her parents were young native Koreans, possibly unmarried, who were unable to care for her. She was under the care of a Korean foster mother prior to coming to the United States. Her departure from Korea was delayed for several months because she was being treated for tuberculosis. She arrived in Los Angeles, California on 13 December 1979 with a Korean passport which had to be relinquished at the time of her adoption. A U.S. birth certificate was applied for and received showing her adopted name, Lisa Linn Sharp, and listing Nicholas Kirk Sharp and Melinda Ann (Round) Sharp as her adoptive parents. A formal adoption decree was issued in Ventura, California in February of 1981. Petition for naturalization was filed 11 May 1984 and she became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 2 November 1984. She has had autosomal and full mitochondrial DNA testing performed by Family Tree DNA and her mtDNA haplogroup is D4n. We recall that her Korean biological mother attempted to make contact with her in the late 1980s or 1990s and believe that the request was passed through the Friends of Children of Vietnam agency and the the Ventura County California Social Services Department. However, Bang Ok / Lisa did not wish to follow up at the time. In addition to any information relating to her Korean biological parents we would also be interested in obtaining documents such as her Korean birth certificate, Korean Family Registration records and Korean Passport registration records if they exist.
