My mother-in-law was adopted soon after birth. When she was an adult and had a family of her own‚ they traveled to Los Angeles to take the kids to Disneyland. She decided to get a copy of her birth certificate‚ and the clerk accidentally handed her the original birth certificate BEFORE the adoption had taken place. She stared at it for a few seconds and glanced at the mother's birth name‚ she remembers it as "Marian" or something similar. She thought the last name looked like "Robinson" but she said the clerk grabbed the paper out of her hands before it dawned on her that she had actual information about her birth mother in her hands. The clerk quickly handed her another sheet‚ which was her adopted birth certificate and immediately left the counter to return the first document to the file. She has had her DNA tested and there are DNA family members who show up as matches‚ but of course her birth mother has already passed. (My mother-in-law is currently in her late 80's but her suspected birth mother lived to be 105‚ if only she had been tested far sooner.) From the DNA matches‚ I think I've found the family‚ but none of the other children from the birth mother have any idea about a baby given up for adoption by any of the three sisters who could have been her mother. Either they don't know‚ or they find it such an embarrassment that they refuse to consider the possibility and simply deny any connection. However‚ the DNA speaks for itself. They're just not interested‚ no matter how much the DNA speaks. One of the maternal possibilities who did live in Los Angeles‚ CA was named Miriam (very close to Marian) and her birth surname was Chandler. She was married at the time my MIL was born‚ so it's possible that she had an affair or was raped‚ perhaps - which led to her decision to give the baby up for adoption. Miriam did have another child‚ but that daughter is no longer living‚ either. There are DNA matches from her birth father's side‚ but I've found nothing definitive as of yet. As time goes on‚ I'm sure more family members will have their DNA tested and we shall see what crops up.
