We were separated when I was four. They told my adopted parents, who asked about adopting you as well, that you would kill me if they took on both of us. I was not consulted. This decision from California Family Services was based on one incident, which was when, out of frustration, you tossed me out the window of the 2nd story bathroom. I would have told them that you were the only reason I was alive to begin with. Our mother, Valentine, was a greater threat to me that you ever were. I remember you as Joey, and I think of you often. Edward, my adopted father, would visit you at the Chino Home for boys. He tried to keep tabs on you, but eventually he lost touch. He told me that you had a rougher time of it that I did. From what I remember, I annoyed you, and you were more patient than anyone your age should expect to be. I have never forgotten you. The last time I saw you, you made me laugh, and I still laugh when recalling the memory. I don’t know if this will find you, or even if you are alive, but I hope so. I have never forgotten you, and if I only had one thing I was allowed to say to you, it would be this: Thank you. Godspeed Joe Caldwell.
