I recently came into possession of my Adoption Decree (LA County AD 12949) which lists my birth mother’s name as Virginia Mae Powers). I know nothing about her except her birth and death dates (December 24, 1922 to May 16, 2009). Her funeral was handled by the Poway-Bernardo Mortuary in San Diego County. When I contacted them to get additional family information, I was told they did not keep records beyond ten years from the date of death. They suggested I request an Informational Death Certificate which I have not done as yet. The only thing they could tell me was her ashes/body was released to Jilson Powers, who is probably either the husband or a son. I have never tried to get any information previously as I considered myself fortunate to have been granted such great adoptive parents. At this point, I would like to get some kind of closure by learning more about my actual birth mother, the circumstances of my adoption, and if I have any surviving siblings.
