My grandmother, Bernice Weathers, gave birth to twins on Easter Sunday, 1948, in Los Angeles County, California. They were being adopted by Mr/Mrs Ray Fletcher of Lennox, California. I believe she called them Jody and Justin, but records show the only set of twins born that day in that county were named Christopher Ray Fletcher and Christine Gay Fletcher. This would make sense, because they were tied into a sting on black market baby adoptions that made the news nationwide, resulting in arrests. One of the details of the workings of the adoptions was that the woman who ran the ring had the expectant mother register in the hospital for the birth under the name of the adoptive mother. The birth certificate would then have the adoptive mother’s name on it, making it difficult for the birth mother to return to claim parental rights later, and it left the medical bills from the hospital in the adoptive family’s name. The money paid for the twins was 875. Bernice got 200. Bernice then married Gail Chaffee who was the nephew of the woman running the ring, possibly to prevent her testimony during the trial.
