After my mother’s death in 2007 an 11x14 photograph of a little girl was discovered in her closet. I always believed that I was the oldest and only girl with six younger brothers. The little girl in the photo looks enough like my oldest brother to be a twin, and looks to be about 3 months old. My Aunt tells the story that my mother was pregnant from a previous marriage that didn’t work out and after meeting my dad, he required her to give the baby up. The marriage and baby were kept a secret until after her passing. She met my dad in March of 1952 and was possibly 3 to 4 months along when they met. She went on to stay with his family in Roanoke VA. and were later stationed in Lubbock TX. where I was born in September of 1953. Family members on my dad’s side all deny any knowledge her. Birth months are only a guess, and there’s not much to go on. I suspect the baby went to a friend or family member, since the photo of this baby was professional and the baby was several months old, making it likely it was someone she knew. My mother was married as a young girl, to a man named Donald Hogan from Alabama. Her birth place was also Alabama. They were married in Tiajuana Mexico, in 1951 and lived in San Diego, CA, where he was stationed in the Navy. She left him after an argument, when he told her they weren’t really married, so she never divorced him believing they weren’t. No doubt she was pregnant when she left, afraid and ashamed. I display the photo now wondering where my sister is, and if she even knows she has a sister and 6 brothers. I hope to find her someday.
