DNA Testing for Adoptees and Parents
Many people take their genetics for granted. But if you’re adopted, you don’t know where your family tree began or who gave you blue eyes. DNA testing can provide some answers to the questions you have about your identity and your biological family.
You can also use DNA in your adoption reunion search. With scientific accuracy, your DNA can provide leads to those who share your genetic traits.
With an increase in people using at-home test kits, there’s a chance one of your family members has submitted their DNA for testing. By doing your own test, you increase the chance of reuniting with your biological parents or finding your adopted child.
How Does a DNA Test Work?
When you take a DNA test, you provide a sample. This is usually done by swabbing your cheek or spitting into a small tube. You submit this DNA sample to a testing site, such as MyHeritage DNA. The site analyzes and compares your DNA with others in its database to find potential leads.
But you don’t have to stop there. If you’ve already done a DNA test, you can upload your data to your profile on Adopted.com. We’ll compare your DNA and check for leads with our other members who have also provided their DNA data.

How Long Do DNA Test Results Take?
The timeline for getting your DNA results depends on the test and the provider you use. The top DNA match sites usually provide results in three to eight weeks. You can view the results online when they’re ready.

How to Find Biological Parents With DNA
DNA can help adoptees reunite with their biological family members by finding shared DNA. Since everyone inherits DNA from their parents, some specific sequences can be passed down through generations. As a general rule, the more DNA you share, the more closely related you are.
Specific parts of DNA, known as markers, can help identify biological relationships. These markers contain predictable inheritance patterns, which means they’re passed down from parents to their children. While your DNA is unique to you, the markers passed from birth parents to their children will closely resemble theirs.
Using these markers helps to reduce potential mistakes, known as “false positives,” when comparing DNA. Two unrelated people can share common traits or ethnic characteristics. However, with a focus on unique markers, DNA testing can eliminate those false positives and provide highly accurate results.
